Multilingual website design in Ireland, and bilingual Irish sites

Each language gets its own address, its own metadata and hreflang that validates. You pay €450 once for the architecture and €250 for each language you add.

  • €450 for the architecture, €250 per language, translation quoted separately
  • A separate indexable address per language, never a query string
  • Síneadh fada correct in names, addresses, form fields and PDFs
  • Language chosen in words — Gaeilge, Deutsch, Español — never by flag

€450 builds the language architecture, and €250 covers each language you add. The first 10 pages in each language are loaded and checked at no extra charge. Translation is quoted separately, or supplied by you at no cost.

What you get for €450

  • A folder per language at its own indexable address — /fr/, /ga/ — never a query string.
  • Hreflang in both directions plus x-default, validated against every URL before you go live.
  • One XML sitemap per language, submitted to Search Console on your launch day.
  • Titles and descriptions in each language for your first 10 pages, included in the €450.
  • A switcher labelled in words — Gaeilge, Deutsch, Español — never a flag.
  • Síneadh fada stored and rendered correctly in names, addresses, form fields and your PDFs.
  • Your own admin in every language, so one price change takes one pass, not one per language.
  • A launch check on 20 sample URLs: canonical, hreflang, language tag and indexability.

How your second language goes live

  1. Your pages are mapped to a language plan, then folders, hreflang, x-default and per-language sitemaps are built and loaded into your admin.
  2. You send the translated text in one spreadsheet, or name a translator for me to brief. That is 20 minutes of your time.
  3. From launch day the site is yours: every later edit happens in your own admin, in whichever language you choose.

What you pay, line by line

€450 buys the architecture once, and it carries any number of languages. Each language after that costs €250 plus loading. A bilingual business site with Irish starts at €2,300.

What the price covers, and what it does not

Included

  • Address structure, canonicals and hreflang for every language, validated before your launch date.
  • One sitemap per language, submitted to Search Console in launch week.
  • Your first 10 pages in each language loaded, proofed against your source and published.
  • Síneadh fada correct in names, addresses, form fields and PDF output.
  • A switcher labelled in words, on every page and in the footer.

Quoted separately

  • Professional translation, priced per word by the translator briefed for you.
  • Native-speaker review of a machine first pass, priced once your word count is in.
  • Page 11 onward in each language, at €40 per 5 pages.
  • Video, audio and PDF assets in each language, quoted when you list them.

The threshold: 10 pages per language are included, page 11 onward at €40 per 5 pages.

Is this the right job for you?

A good fit if

  • You sell into two or more markets, and each needs its own indexable address.
  • You deliver a public-facing service for a public body, and section 9E has applied since 21 December 2024.
  • You are applying to Foras na Gaeilge before the 2026 round closes on 31 October.

Probably not, if

  • You want a translate widget dropped on top, with nobody reading the output.
  • You have one market and one language, with no second market planned this year.

What is included

What this looks like in practice

One address per language

A folder per language, canonicals that agree and hreflang pointing both ways, validated against every URL before you launch.

Edits you make yourself

Every language editable in your own admin, so one price change takes one pass, not one edit per language.

Irish done properly

Síneadh fada stored and rendered correctly, plus a switcher labelled Gaeilge and Béarla on every page and in the footer.

Each language ranks on its own

Per-market titles, descriptions and sitemaps, so each language competes in its own results instead of cannibalising your English pages.

How it runs

From first call to live

  1. 1

    Structure first

Folders, hreflang, x-default and one sitemap per language, built before any words arrive.

  2. 2

    Your 20 minutes

One spreadsheet of translations, or a translator's name for me to brief. Nothing else is needed from you.

  3. 3

    Yours to edit

All languages go live together, and every later edit is yours to make in your own admin.

7languages on one B2B site

For a modular-home manufacturer we built a single site serving seven markets, each language with its own indexable address, and dealer enquiries arriving through one structured form instead of scattered email threads.

Translate widget bolted on

  • Every language shares one URL, so only English is indexed.
  • Hreflang missing or pointing one way, so Google ignores it.
  • Fadas break into question marks in names and PDFs.
  • Each price change is edited by hand in every language.

A real address per language

  • Each language has its own indexable address and sitemap.
  • Hreflang points both ways, with x-default, validated before launch.
  • Síneadh fada renders correctly in names, forms and PDF output.
  • One price change, one pass, done in your own admin.

Questions

What clients ask before we start

What does a multilingual website cost in Ireland?

€450 for the architecture, then €250 per language you add. Loading and checking is €40 per 5 pages beyond your first 10 in each language. Translation is quoted separately, or supplied by you at no cost. A bilingual business site with Irish starts at €2,300.

Can I just use Google Translate on my website?

Not on the pages that sell. A translate widget leaves search engines nothing to index, because no separate page exists to rank. Customers reading in that language spot machine output on the first line. A machine first pass suits support content when a native speaker reviews it.

Does each language need its own address?

Yes — a language without its own address cannot be indexed, linked or shared. Sub-folders per language keep every bit of authority on one domain, which suits a single business. You get /fr/ and /ga/, not ?lang=fr.

Who pays for the translation?

You do, and the route is yours to pick. Supply the text yourself at no cost, brief a professional translator through me, or run a machine first pass with a native reviewer. Legal, medical and safety copy goes to a professional every time.

Does my organisation have to provide an Irish-language website?

Not as a blanket rule. Section 9E of the Official Languages Act 2003 has applied since 21 December 2024. It was inserted by section 9 of the 2021 Amendment Act. It requires a public body to take all appropriate steps to ensure its public-facing services comply. Your own obligation comes from that body's published language scheme.

Is there funding for an Irish-language website?

Yes — Foras na Gaeilge match-funds up to half the cost. Up to €1,500 goes towards a website, inside a €3,000 scheme maximum. The 2026 round closes on 31 October. Confirm eligibility with Foras na Gaeilge before you set the budget.
